ARTIST STATEMENT
I am always contrasting opposing elements in my work such as the natural and the manufactured, organic and geometric, sacred and profane, ethereal and material, colorful and dull. I enjoy seeing what happens if I can get these to work together, sometimes they do, often they don’t. Either way they begin to inform each other in new and unexpected ways. Like people with opposing viewpoints who come to new conclusions, sometimes it’s a disaster, other times it can be beautiful.
These dichotomies often take on an apocalyptic or a dystopian appearance in my paintings. While I personally don’t believe the world is on the brink of destruction it’s difficult not to be influenced by my Mormon upbringing in Utah being taught to fear and prepare for the “end of days”. Although, I must admit, the idea that everything we know about our life as it is right now can dramatically and cataclysmically change in an instant is undeniably fascinating.
