ARTIST STATEMENT

Peter Sarkisian was born in Glendale California in 1965.  His father, artist Paul Sarkisian, was a key member of Walter Hopps’ group of LA based artists, which included Ed Kienholz, Wallace Berman, Billy Al Bengston, Llyn Foulkes, John Altoon and others.  Peter’s father had established himself as a painter in the fifties by participating in important Los Angeles exhibitions, such as the Santa Monica Pier Show (also called the Merry-Go-Round Show), as well as by showing in Hopps’ Syndel Studio and at the Ferus Gallery.  Peter’s mother, Carol Sarkisian, was a young ceramic artist, and the family often visited with John Mason or spent long weekends at Peter Volkas’ studio in Berkley.

By the late 1960’s the Sarkisians spent much of their time traveling for Paul’s exhibition and teaching circuit, and in 1970 the family moved to Albuquerque New Mexico, where Peter’s father was asked to produce a series of lithographs at the Tamarind Institute.  A year later they moved into an old school compound in the small town of Cerrillos, New Mexico, which included a full size gymnasium that Peter’s father converted into a studio.  The gymnasium doubled as a roller rink, and the Sarkisian’s often hosted skating parties for friends and fellow artists, such as painter Georgia O’Keefe.
